The symposia will provide a forum for researchers to exchange latest new ideas and present new
research advances in the general areas related to computational modelling of the brain and nervous
systems, including development and learning in animals and artificial systems/robots,
computational neurogenetic modelling, and applications of related techniques.
Symposium 1: Development and Learning, 24 November 2008
Co-Chairs: John Weng and Jeffrey L. Krichmar
Topics: Biologically inspired models, mental architectures, cell models, plasticity, adaptation, self-
organization, attention, reasoning, association, vision, audition, touch, motor, development, motivational
system, learning modes (including supervised, reinforcement and communicative modes) and applications.
Invited speakers (preliminary list): Mriganka Sur, MIT; Jeffrey L. Krichmar, Neural Science Institute, La
Jolla, USA; Steven Levinson, University of Illinois; Mike Merzenich, UCSF; John Weng, Michigan State
University.
Symposium 2: Computational Neurogenetic Modelling, 25 November 2008
Co-Chairs: Lubica Benuskova and Alessandro E. P. Villa
Topics: The role of genes in brain processes and functions like neural oscillations, language, learning &
memory, etc. Genetic and neuronal mechanisms of neurodegenerative diseases. New advances in modelling
and theoretical understanding of the brain and the nervous system.

University of Lausanne; Cliff Abraham, University of Otago, NZ; Lubica Benuskova, KEDRI/AUT, NZ; Nikola

Papers submission: 30 July 2008, to the Workshop Chairs. Papers of 6 pages maximum must be
prepared in the LNCS Springer format.
Papers acceptance: 30 September 2008.
Publications: All accepted papers will be published in Symposia Proceedings. Selected papers will be
invited to a special issue of a journal and an edited volume.
Fees: US$350. A fee to attend both the INNS/NNN08 and ICONIP08 is US$800.
